Key Functions of an Alternator:
Powers Electrical Systems: It provides electricity to all car components when the engine is running, including lights, electric steering, and windows.
Charges the Battery: It continuously recharges the battery, which is drained when starting the car.
Converts Energy: It converts alternating current (AC) generated by the spinning rotor into direct current (DC) needed for the car's electronics
Regulates Voltage: It features a voltage regulator that ensures the correct voltage is sent to the battery, preventing overcharging.
How It Works:
The alternator is driven by the engine's crankshaft via a serpentine belt. This spinning action induces a magnetic field in the rotor, creating alternating current (AC) in the surrounding stator windings, which is then converted to direct current (DC). If the alternator fails, the car will run solely on battery power until the battery dies.
