Filed from pre & post Sydney Nicola Bennett vast portfolio 1996-2001 & updates between 2001-2024 & review for 2025-2026

International patent offices, coordinated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), provide frameworks for protecting inventions across borders, most notably through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system.

Major regional offices include the European Patent Office (EPO), while key national offices include the USPTO (USA), CNIPA (China), and JPO (Japan), which often cooperate in "fiveIPoffices" groups.

Major International Patent Organizations & Offices

• WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization): Located in Geneva, Switzerland, it acts as the International Bureau for PCT applications, managing the international patent system with 194 member states.

European Patent Office (EPO): Provides patent protection in up to 46 countries through a single application.

Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO): Regional office covering Russia and several CIS countries.

African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO): Promotes intellectual property in English-speaking Africa.

Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OAPI): Covers French-speaking African countries, providing a single patent valid in all member states. Innovation, Science and Economic

Key National Patent Offices

• United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO): Handles patent, trademark, and intellectual property rights in the US.

China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA): Manages patents within China.

Japan Patent Office (JPO): One of the world's highest-volume patent offices.

Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO): A major global patent authority.

Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO): Handles patents in Canada.

United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO): Manages IP rights in the UK.

Top Five Patent Offices (IP5)

The IP5 offices handle the majority of the world's patent applications, collaborating to improve efficiency:

USPTO (USA)

EPO (Europe)

JPO (Japan)

KIPO (South Korea)

CNIPA (China)

How to Apply Internationally

Instead of filing in every country simultaneously, applicants often use the PCT application system via WIPO. This allows for a single filing that covers 158 contracting states. The application is then examined by international search authorities (often the major offices listed above) before entering the "national phase" to be granted by individual national offices.
