Operating Duration: They are designed to operate for over 20,000 cycles, outlasting lithium-ion (<10,000) and lead-acid (<2,000) technologies.

Maintenance: High-quality systems with magnetic bearings can operate for years with minimal, if any, maintenance.

Performance: They are highly efficient, often boasting 90% or greater round-trip efficiency, and are ideal for quick, high-power, short-duration applications. 

1.2V Note

If referring specifically to 1.2V Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries used in small consumer flywheel devices (like hobby motors/toy cars), those batteries typically last for a few hundred to a few thousand charge cycles depending on usage and charging conditions, not the 15-20 years mentioned for utility-scale flywheel energy storage systems.
